What types of visa exist?

There are two main routes for a French traveller: the electronic tourist visa, which notably allows performing Umrah outside the Hajj period, and the specific schemes linked to Umrah managed by the official Saudi platforms. The electronic tourist visa is generally valid for one year with stays limited to 90 days per visit, subject to eligibility.

Depending on your nationality or situation (residence in a third country, type of passport), the options may differ. Do not rely on outdated information: only the official platforms are authoritative.

The official platforms to know

Applications are made online, either via the official Saudi visa portal or via the Nusuk app, the government platform dedicated to organising stays in Mecca and Medina. These channels display up-to-date conditions, applicable fees and required documents.

Beware of unofficial intermediaries who overcharge for the process. Applying directly is within reach of any traveller equipped with a passport, a recent ID photo and a bank card.

If a problem arises (card refused, application pending, document rejected), the official platform’s support is the first recourse; consulates do not issue Saudi visas. Keep your application reference to make any exchange easier.

Passport and documents to prepare

The basic rule: a passport valid for at least six months after the date of entry into Saudi Arabia. Check this point before choosing any flight, as a passport renewal can take several weeks in periods of high demand.

• Accommodation address on the ground (confirmed hotel).

Processing times and insurance

The e-visa is often issued quickly, sometimes within hours, but it is prudent to apply at least one to two weeks before departure. The medical insurance associated with the visa is generally included in the fees; read the coverage and top it up with your own travel insurance if needed.

Certain health conditions (vaccinations depending on the visa type or the period) may apply. They are indicated at the time of application and on the health authorities’ websites.

Watch out for typing errors: a mistake in the passport number or dates of birth can block boarding. Copy the information exactly as it appears on the passport, then re-read the summary before confirming. Keep the visa received by email in several places (phone, cloud, paper printout).

On arrival in Saudi Arabia

At border control, present your passport and e-visa (a copy on your phone is generally enough; keep a printed version too). Fingerprints and a photo are taken at the airport. Keep your hotel confirmation and return ticket at hand, as they may be requested.

Once inside, respect the duration allowed by your visa: overstaying exposes you to fines and can complicate a future trip.

From the airport, options to reach your hotel are straightforward: the Haramain train from the Jeddah terminal, or an official taxi or ride-hailing car from Medina. Have some cash in riyals or a bank card activated for foreign use ready for your first expenses on the ground.
