Umrah Preparation Checklist: Luggage, Health, Budget

A successful Umrah is prepared in five blocks: documents (passport valid 6 months, visa), planning (flights, hotels, train between the cities), luggage suited to the climate and to walking, health (prescriptions, any vaccines required by the visa) and budget (spending on the ground). This page lists everything, in the order to tackle it.

Documents and formalities

First reflex, several weeks ahead: check that the passport is valid for at least six months after the date of entry into Saudi Arabia. Then submit the visa application online on the official platforms and keep an electronic and a paper copy of the visa obtained.

  • Passport valid at least 6 months after the date of entry.
  • Visa obtained online, copy on phone + printed version.
  • Return flight tickets and hotel confirmations accessible offline.
  • Photocopies of documents, kept separate from the originals.

Arrangements to line up in the right order

The safest order: flights first (their price drives everything else), then hotels consistent with the arrival airport, then the Haramain train between Mecca and Medina if you visit both cities, and finally the extras (rental car, transfers). In high season, each step must be locked in early: the best locations and train slots go first.

Keep a one-page summary: dates, hotel addresses in English and Arabic if possible, reference numbers and train times.

Luggage: think climate and walking

You walk a lot during an Umrah: broken-in, comfortable shoes are the most important item in the suitcase. Add light, covering clothes for the day, a warm layer for winter evenings in Medina, a light backpack for days out, a water bottle, and a foldable bag for the return (gifts and purchases on the ground).

On the practical side: a power adapter (British type-G sockets in Saudi Arabia), an external battery, and a cabin-size wash bag if you are optimising luggage.

Health and well-being

Take your regular treatments in sufficient quantity, with the prescription, in the cabin bag. Depending on the visa type and the period, certain vaccinations may be required or recommended: the information appears during the visa application and from the health authorities. Sunscreen, remedies for common ailments and good hydration make the difference in the desert climate.

Also arrange travel insurance covering medical costs abroad, if it is not already included with your visa or your bank card.

Budget, expenses and phone

An international bank card is accepted almost everywhere in the cities; tell your bank about the trip to avoid a block, and keep some cash in riyals for small expenses and tips. There is no fixed budget: it is built from your confirmed arrangements, with a margin of about 10%.

For the phone, an eSIM or a local SIM card bought on arrival provides data at a reasonable price, useful for maps, ride-hailing and train tickets. Download offline maps before departure.

The last week before departure

Seven days out: re-check flight times, confirm hotels and train tickets, print or gather the documents, weigh the luggage against the allowance, and share your itinerary with a relative. On the day itself, reach the airport with time to spare: departures towards Jeddah and Medina are often packed in season.

Finally, prepare your phone: load the useful apps (offline maps, ride-hailing, train tickets, messaging) and check that your codes and documents work without a connection. Once there, everything is managed better with a working smartphone.
