Which Airport Should You Choose to Arrive in Saudi Arabia?

Jeddah (JED), the gateway to Mecca

Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport is the main entry point for Umrah travellers. Mecca lies about 80 km away, roughly an hour by road depending on traffic. Above all, the terminal has its own Haramain high-speed train station: you can reach Mecca or Medina directly from the airport, without going through the city centre.

It is also the best-served airport from Europe, with direct flights and many connections via the Gulf and Turkish hubs.

On arrival, formalities can take time in high season: allow a margin before any planned transfer, and keep your visa and hotel confirmation accessible on your phone. Official taxis and ride-hailing cars wait at the terminal exit; hotels near the airport can help in case of a very late arrival, before heading to Mecca the next day.

Medina (MED), to start with Medina

Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport in Medina is an interesting option if your programme starts with the Prophet’s Mosque. As the city is compact, the transfer to hotels near Medina’s Haram usually takes less than 30 minutes by car.

From Medina, the Haramain train reaches Mecca in about 2 hours 30 minutes. Note, however, that some travellers prefer to arrive directly in Mecca; the order of the cities is a personal choice to align with your hotels.

Taif (TIF), closer but poorly served

Taif airport sits about 80 to 90 km from Mecca, at altitude. Its proximity is an asset on paper, but the international flight offering is limited and connections from Europe are rare. It remains useful mainly for domestic flights combined with an arrival elsewhere in the country.

Practical point: Taif lies in the mountains, at around 1,700 metres of altitude, with a cooler climate than the coast. The road to Mecca then descends in switchbacks; allow about an hour to an hour and a half of driving depending on traffic.

Riyadh (RUH) and Dammam (DMM), special cases

Riyadh and Dammam are each several hundred kilometres from Mecca: expect a full day on the road or an additional domestic flight. These airports only make sense in specific cases: an exceptional fare, a family stopover in the country, or a combined trip. If you consider them, factor the cost and fatigue of the transfer into your comparison.

Also note that Saudi domestic flights are frequent and relatively affordable: arriving in Riyadh followed by a domestic flight to Jeddah or Medina is technically simple, but adds a connection, a baggage check and an extra half-day of travel.

How to compare concretely

Compare the total door-to-door price, not just the plane ticket: flight + transfer to the hotel + journey time. A cheaper flight to Medina can become more expensive if you must reach Mecca immediately. Conversely, a “Medina first” stay can turn an arrival at MED into an excellent deal.

• MED: ideal if the stay starts in Medina, short urban transfers.
• TIF: close to Mecca but few international flights.
• RUH and DMM: keep for special cases, long transfer to Mecca.
