Practical pilgrimage tips

Driving in Saudi Arabia for your Umrah

Renting a vehicle gives you full freedom for your journeys between Jeddah airport, the mosques of Makkah and Madinah, and the historic sites (Badr, Uhud, Quba).

Licence and documents

French and European national licences are generally accepted by rental companies; an international driving permit is recommended in addition, to be obtained before departure. Also bring your passport and visa.

Motorways and speed cameras

The motorway network is modern, including the Makkah–Madinah axis (about 450 km). Automatic speed cameras are numerous: respect the speed limits and avoid using your phone while driving.

Parking near the Haram

In Makkah, spaces close to the Haram are rare and expensive, and traffic is regulated at peak times. Most travellers leave the car at the hotel and walk or take the shuttle.
