Direct or with a stopover

A direct flight from Paris to Jeddah takes about 5 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours. With a stopover (Jeddah or Medina via Riyadh, Dubai, Doha, Istanbul or Cairo), total travel time frequently rises to 9-12 hours, sometimes more. The saving can be substantial, especially for a family: for four people, even a moderate per-ticket gap represents a significant sum.

Choose reasonable stopovers (1 hour 30 minutes to 3 hours): too short, they are risky if a flight is delayed; too long, they exhaust travellers, especially with children.

When to plan ahead for a lower fare

Prices climb as the date approaches, particularly before Ramadan and school holidays. In high-demand periods, aiming several weeks, even two to three months ahead, is the prudent rule. In quiet periods, a few weeks often suffice, but good fares go fast on the most popular dates.

Be flexible if you can: shifting departure or return by one or two days sometimes changes the displayed fare noticeably.

Also useful: track prices for a few days before buying. Most comparison sites offer alerts that flag price drops; when buying several tickets, even a moderate drop per passenger is a real saving for the family.

Choosing the arrival airport

Jeddah (JED) is closest to Mecca and has a Haramain station inside the terminal. Medina (MED) works if you start in Medina. Compare both on the comparison site: depending on the dates, one can be significantly cheaper than the other, and the train between the two cities (about 2 hours 30 minutes) makes combinations easy.

Some travellers optimise by arriving in one city and departing from the other (an “open-jaw” ticket), which avoids a back-and-forth between Mecca and Medina at the end of the stay.

Luggage and comfort

Check the luggage allowance included in the fare: the cheapest tickets sometimes include no checked bag, which skews the comparison. For a ten-day stay with suitable clothing, a checked bag is generally necessary. So compare “bag included” fares across airlines.

On long flights with a stopover, favour schedules that arrive in daytime: transfers to hotels and formalities are simpler than in the middle of the night.

Finally, check the ticket’s change policy: the lowest fares are often non-changeable. For a trip whose dates may move (visa issuance, family calendar), a ticket changeable for a reasonable fee is worthwhile insurance.
