The Haramain high-speed line serves four stations useful to travellers: Medina, Rabigh (King Abdullah Economic City), Jeddah airport and Mecca. Between Mecca and Medina, allow about 2 hours 30 minutes. The trains are recent, air-conditioned, with economy and business classes and space for luggage.

Tickets are bought online on the operator’s website or app, with fares varying by date and how far ahead you plan. In high season (Ramadan, school holidays), the most popular slots go fast: get them as soon as your dates are fixed.

Reaching the stations

The Haramain stations are not in the historic centre: Mecca’s station is a few kilometres from the Haram, and Medina’s is also some distance from the central perimeter. Plan a taxi or ride-hailing car for the last stretch with your luggage, and arrive at the station with time to spare: checks and boarding work like a European station, with gates closing before departure.

Good to know: the Jeddah airport station lets you chain flight and train without entering the city, an appreciable time saving on arrival.

With young children or bulky luggage, some travellers prefer a door-to-door taxi between hotel and station, or even a direct transfer between the two cities to avoid handling suitcases. It costs more, but is far more restful at the end of the stay.

By road: car, taxi or coach

By road, Mecca and Medina are about 450 km apart, or 4 to 5 hours of driving depending on breaks and traffic at the city entrances. The motorway is modern and well maintained, with regular service stations. This option makes sense if you are several people (the cost is shared), if you are renting a car for the whole stay, or if train times do not suit you.

Coaches and private transfer services also link the two cities. Compare the total price per person: for two people, the train is often competitive; with five or six, the car takes the advantage.

By car, carry water and take regular breaks, especially in summer: the crossing runs through full desert territory and the air conditioning runs non-stop. Motorway service stations offer fast food and restrooms.

Train or road: how to choose

The train wins on duration, comfort and timetable reliability; the road wins on flexibility (depart when you want, possible stops) and sometimes on budget for a group. With older travellers or a lot of luggage, the train remains the most restful option, provided you anticipate the transfers to the stations.

Organising the transition within the stay

Align the intercity transfer with your check-in and check-out times: a mid-morning departure lets you arrive for the afternoon. Travel light between the two cities if possible, and keep documents and valuables in a hand bag rather than in the hold or the boot.

In high season, lock this transfer in as soon as the hotels are chosen: a full train slot or an unavailable driver can shift the whole programme. Always have a plan B (the other transport mode) identified before the day itself.
